Last night's interclub fixture featured a fascinating clash between youth and... let's call it "accumulated squash wisdom." On average, our team was probably about three times the age of the opposition. Fortunately, squash matches are won with racquets, not birth certificates.
Match 1 – Stephane (#4) ✅ Win 3-0
A dream start for the team. Having finally managed to engineer my way down to the #4 position, I was determined to prove that this was a strategic move rather than age-related decline. The plan worked perfectly. Strong start, controlled the match from the outset, and a comfortable 3-0 win. Sometimes life is all about finding your true level.
Match 2 – Kartik (#3) ❌ Loss 3-0
Kartik faced a very strong opponent and despite battling hard, went down 3-0. The post-match analysis was swift and unanimous: perhaps the current "ranking night and interclub only" training programme needs a small upgrade. Radical thought: a practice session or two between matches.
Match 3 – Erich (#1) ❌ Loss 3-2
The match of the evening from a suspense perspective. Erich and his opponent traded blows throughout a high-quality contest that could have gone either way. After a great battle and plenty of nervous moments for the spectators, the young legs eventually prevailed in the fifth game. A narrow 3-2 loss, but a superb performance.
Match 4 – Mark (#2) ❌ Loss 3-2
With the overall result hanging in the balance, Mark stepped onto court. What followed was another epic battle full of determination, grit and long rallies. Unfortunately, just like Erich, he came up agonisingly short in the deciding fifth game. Another 3-2 defeat, but certainly no lack of effort.
Final Thoughts
The scoreboard may not have gone our way, but the evening certainly did. We showed that experience can still compete with youth... at least until the fifth game.
The real winners, however, were the pizza and beer that followed the matches, where recovery and tactical discussions were conducted to the highest professional standards.
Our next fixture isn't until 3 November, giving us plenty of time to:
train a little more,
improve our fitness a little,
complain a little less about young opponents running everywhere,
and come back stronger next time.
Until then, the veterans' tour continues. 💪🏸🍕🍺
