Club Championship 2021

With 27 entries, including many juniors, the 2021 GC Championships had a packed program, and the organizer dream-team Mark Robbins and Erich Aschenberger did a fantastic job in ensuring a smooth running of the tournament despite some no-shows.

The four top seeds reached the semi-finals fairly uncontested. In the top half of the draw, no 1 seeded and last year's club champion (and World no 46 in women's Squash!) Cindy Merlo faced the tireless and quirky Gabriel Dalvit. Gabriel fought well but played too defensive and slow, thus giving the talented Cindy too many opportunities for fast and precise attacks. Cindy won in 3 straight sets. In the bottom half of the draw oldie Luc Hänni faced the tricky Joel Sommer, who in the third set, after cleary losing the first two, with some ping-pong-esque shots to the front made life more difficult for Luc, who needed 4 match-balls to close out game.

The final was a re-match of last year's, where Cindy had outplayed Luc and came out on top. This year, however, Luc had this tactic right and was sharp from the start. As always, the gifted Cindy hit lots of beautiful and attacking shots, but Luc's moving abilities to the front, counter-drops and boasts proved to be too good this time. Luc wins in 3 straight sets, 11/6 11/7 11/8.

After having ended up runner-up three times in a row in the past 3 years, Luc won his well deserved first Club champs title.

The long day of Squash ended with beers and pizza for a great crowd. Also great to see that so many juniors (huge Cindy fanbase!) played the tournament and stayed also for the more social part. We'll hopefully see them again next year!

Big thanks to Mark and Erich, the organizers of the tournaments. The club very much appreciates your continued commitment to the Club Champs!
